    Description

For sale today is a gorgeous and scarce variety of 1917 Legal Tender or United States Note. It is the Fr 39m Mule variety that has the Speelman-White signature on the front, but the back was printed with an old leftover plate from the former treasurer John Burke. What is amazing about this note is that this plate made it through the entire run of Elliott-White production, and far into the Speelman-White batch. Mules were common in the M-A block as they switched over to the new plate number positions, and less common into the N-A block as most of the Burke plates wore out or were replaced. But R-A block Mules are almost unseen, as these notes would have been printed a couple years after Burke left office and White took over. This note also features a nice lower 7 digit serial number which adds to its eye appeal.
This note grades a Choice AU in my opinion. It has no vertical or horizontal folds. The only thing separating this from being Uncirculated is a corner bump and some specks in the margin. Still looks pack fresh and is loaded with crispness and vibrant color. No pinholes. Please check scans and judge grade and condition for yourself. Lists at 4 in AU-58. Not sure if this is a 58 or would go 55, but still a gorgeous AU either way and a scarce block Mule variety. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
