Description
Up for sale is a gorgeous Gem CU example of a tough variety. This is an 1880 US Note Fr 56 with Tillman-Morgan signatures on the front but the back was printed with an old four digit Huston back plate 2607 making this an unknown Mule. They only used four digit plates through Huston's term, then with the change to Nebeker signatures, plate numbers were dropped entirely from the reverse. It is amazing that this plate was still in use and not only went through the Nebeker run, but into the Tillman-Morgan notes too. I would not be surprised if this someday got a new Friedberg number 56m.Even without this Mule, just the 1880 series itself is far scarcer than other issues. They only printed 3.68 million Blue Serial 1880 notes total, compared to 327.4 million 1917 red serial notes. That is almost 100x rarer than the 1917 notes you usually see. Only 1.2 million notes carried the Tillman-Morgan signature. These 1880 notes are vastly under-appreciated and should be great sleepers for investment value.
This note is about as nice as they come. It grades a full Gem CU in my opinion. The paper is absolutely pack-fresh and crisp. But look at the centering! You hardly see large notes centered this nicely. The inks are vibrant. Looks like it could have been printed yesterday with its originality. The note even has a very slight offset transfer of the kelly green reverse ink on the capitol building from the sheet above it. Please check scans closely and judge grade and condition for yourself, but this is the nicest 1880 I have ever had. Great candidate for certification, if it slabs Gem, this is a ,750+ note. Sent with signature confirmation. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
